I always crack up when I see the Toyota (and Jeep) Overlanders go out 'on adventure'. Most of them are posers. Buy a TRD Toyota (or any 'trail rated' Jeep), slap on a rooftop tent and buy out REI (who is anti-motorized recreation), and head out. That's all fine and dandy, and I'm happy they are getting out in the woods, but folks my age call this 'camping' and we have been doing it all our lives. We load up the rigs we have, some 4x4, some not, drive up into the mountains or out into the deserts as far as we can, and have a great time. Some hike, some (mountain) bike, some bring along other motorized conveyances to get even farther off the beaten path. There really isn't a difference other than somebody felt the need to rebrand.
Love that you are the oddball in a sea of Toyotas (and Jeeps)! Just proving you don't need all that to get out and go (just about) everywhere they do.
I still have dreams of getting my SX4 lifted and building a small enclosed trailer to haul my KLR 650 and sleep in. Not sure when or if it all will get done, but that doesn't keep me from spending time in the hills exploring via mountain bike, snowmobile, ATV, or dualsport.
