DIY Aux Jack for Non-GPS Stock HUs

Firstly, credit to this thread that talks about how to wire up ordinary CD-ROM audio cable to fit the stock HU

    So here goes:

    Materials required:
    1. CD-ROM Audio Cable (2 ends required, I had to trim off locking clips)
    2. Stereo input jack
    3. 1.5k Ohm Resistor
    4. stereo wire

    Step 1:

Cut and strip insulation off pins required for soldering

    Step 2:

Solder 1.5k Ohm resistor to trigger pins and 3 wires for stereo jack

    Step 3:

I chose to remove the head unit first to determine how much wiring length I needed to the stereo input jack

For the benefit of those who had never removed the silver trim pieces, here how it looks from behind. I used plastic trim removal tools to pop them out

Back of HU, the white connector is where both CD-ROM Audio cable ends plug into

    Step 4:

Solder wires to stereo input jack, nomenclature used are "M" = Middle pin, "O" = Outer pin, "G" = Ground/Shield pin

    Step 5:

    Testing. Success!

    Step 6:

Installing stereo input jack, I elected to drill a hole on the passenger side corner of the HU housing

    Step 7:

    Re-install HU and enjoy!

I did this mod yesterday and although the directions are pretty useful I had an awful time figuring out the HU's pin schematic. Had to search like crazy to get the correct pin layout. This is the schematic from the old forum by icbm that worked for me:

Is there a way to keep the gps with this setup? I haven't been able to find a complete pin out of the system.

Haha, you got this idea from me but your car is much cleaner.

Great write-up. This little tip probably adds a couple of hundred in value to your car and greatly to re-saleability since most young people would never buy a car without an aux jack.

BTW, you could also utilize the switches it the jack to share the input, such as with an after-market XM unit. It would be a good idea to add the extra wires and leave them tucked behind the dash so you wouldn't have to take the radio out again. In other words, the XM would be connected until you plugged something into the jack, then the XM would cut out and the aux jack connected.

Before I got my factory XM unit I experimented with where I would mount an after-market one. I almost got a two-piece unit. It has a flat faceplate and a removable XM module that you mount near the floor and can take with you. I was going to run the wires through the bottom of the vent housing.

I love all the news and talk channels on XM and get it for half price just by calling the renewal dept and asking.

here's another tip - since msn direct is no longer available and if your sx4 came with the msn direct module (gdb 50) (it'll be hanging behind the radio) - you could cut the plug and wire your jack into that plug
