Delete the second cat and start from the first cat or directly from the header with a hiflow cat for some real gains. I wouldn't go over 2.25 inch in diameter for the tubing. Poly urethane bushings to hold everything in place. Catback is just for sound no real gains... you need a freeflowing exhaust that is mandrell bent and idealy stainless steel to reduce some weight. Best place to do all of that is at a performance muffler shop... with good welders... $$

Does removing the second cat triggers a check engine ?

No check engine when deleting the second cat. Its only when you play around with the precat.

just gut the second cat (free) then sawzall the muffler off (free) then have a short pipe and tip welded on to extend out the back (20 bucks)
or ... buy a fancy setup.

Nope. That was my setup. Luved it. Loud when you wanted, no drone on highway.
This is a video, the phone was kinda close so it sounds loud, but it wasn't

I say was my setup, because I don't have my sx4 anymore. Just trolling the site now. Haha. But if you do this, you'll like it.

If I remove the stock exhaust only and add a pipe to the existing connector, would that be less loud than simply just let the thing unplug with nothing else?
