Engine noise - help?

Engine noise is getting worse. No noticeable difference to power or economy, not burning coolant or oil, but it’s getting louder every week now.

Any help would be much appreciated.

con rod brass bearing . needs immediate repair. What is your odometer reading ?

Yeah, that’s a deep, low knock. If I had to take a stab at it, I’d say you have a bearing that wiped in the lower end of the motor…but then again, recorded sounds on a phone can sound a lot different in person. Hope it’s not what I think it is.

The phone recording is pretty true to life, although it does have a slightly more metallic “clank” along with the deep knocking.

The knock frequency would suggest a knock on each up stroke and another on each down stroke, rather than just a piston hitting the top of the cylinder.

Sorry - 102,000 miles. It broke down today - suddenly lost power and sounded like a bunch of golf balls in a washing machine.

The diagnosis - the knocking was actually an ignition issue - the HT lead housing had cracked and let debris get stuck down with the spark plug on cylinder 3. The spark plug thread on the head ended up stripping away leaving the spark plug loose, and catching bits of metal underneath. Jerry rigged with a poorly fitting new HT lead+Housing, but got to get it taken in to the garage because the roadside mechanic was pulling bits of metal out from under where the spark plug had been.
