View Full Version : Ok...Short Shifter question....

I am wondering why or if the short shifter for the swift would be interchangable with our SX4? I realize that it may be a stupid thing to ask, but honestly has anyone else done any research on this? It is not to far out of the question that the same type of set up is used in the two cars. Lots of manufacturers utilize similar parts in different cars.

I have looked all over the darn net trying to find pictures of the SX4 shifter assembly to see what if any the differences are between it and the swift. I can find tons of swift shifters but not one darn pic of the SX4. If I can't find any by this weekend I am going to dig down in my own little guy and see what it looks like.

On a secondary note, lets say that it is similar....what would be some of the hang ups in dropping in the swift short shifter? Maybe someone with a little more technical savvy can explain....

This is one mod that I would love to do to the car, and if it comes down to it I may have to look at having one machined for me...but it would be alot nicer to get one prebuilt so that we could all share in the fun. : )

find me a pic of the swift's shifter assembly, I'll tell you if it's alike.

Boooooooooooo! This is only for a 5 speed :-(

February 29th, 2012, 09:33 AM
Yeah I know...sorry bout that...other than the fact that it does not support the 6 spd....which I don't know why, but I will apologize for...ha ha ha...what is your thoughts on this chrisrunsi? When I put on the new boot for my shifter i seem to remember it being similar....

Darn, $400+shipping for a short shifter ... There must be a less expensive option? I've never spent more than $250 on a SS assembly and that has been for more expensive cars.

speed4ride
February 29th, 2012, 09:57 AM
Actually don't even know if this would be viable...yet. I am hoping to hear from someone that the swift shifter assembly is similar to the sx4 first...then I worry bout the shipping and cost...LOL.

But yeah that is a bit pricey....I am going to look at other avenues regarding the cost if it does infact look like it would work.

Actually....I can't find photo number ONE of our shifter assembly on the net. NOT one diagram of the inner workings....LOL...really frustrating.

It does look pretty similar... I was just looking at my assemble the other day as mine has developed a little squeak with left/right movements. I would have to give a better look to confirm it is the same.

I am going to call the local shop and see what the part number is.... I have been searching all day on line here at work to find a picture of the one that is in our cars.

I also found a place in England that has Swift short shifters for 59 Euros....79 bucks...and the shipping would probably be less. : )

Cross my fingers that it's the same or compatible.

the old sx4club.com had pictures, maybe you can use the wayback machine to find them there.

looks like it may fit. seems to have the right curve on top of it. it may fit all 5 speeds with shift cables (swift sedan 1.6L, esteem 1.8L, aerio, etc.) but IIRC the older cars have a rather straight shift lever, unlike this one that has a bend.

I still don't know what people find wrong about the throw on the SX4 5 speed. it's already pretty short IMO

My previous car had a really short shift, I could literally shift with my wrist and not my forearm. If you have driven a 350Z or a similar car, it was that short. The SX4 shift is not bad, but it can be better.

Well actually my plan is as follows.....

I am hoping that the height of the shifter would in essence not be any shorter, but instead would maintain relatively the same height, but with a shorter throw. I then would look to get an extension for the top, which would raise the shifter height over all, but with the shorter throw would then return the throw to the roughly the same distance as the initial stock.

As I agree that the standard shift is not to terribly long as it is, but if I extend the top end, then it will become to long, and what I am looking to ultimately do is shorten the throw, so that i can then lengthen the top which puts the shifter closer to the steering wheel....and would then have roughtly the same throw as it does now....

: )

does that make any sense? looking to get more of a rally feel out of the car and having the shifter nob higher and closer to the wheel will (in my opinion) help with this....

Then it is on to the headers, ECU, exhaust...etc.

It's amazingly annoying how easy it is to take this car apart. Not one single screw on the center console lids.

Ok, here it is. It does look just like the one on my car. The top picture is from the website you sent. I think we got a match.

ADR your the man! I have been counting down the hours to get out of work so I could do just that!

So I need to look at the cost of getting the swift short shift ordered.... Now I have to get into negotiations with the woman of the house regarding finances.....

That looks exactly the same as the swift, I will have to see how the 6speed looks and compare to the 6speed swift.

Looked at the Aerio shifter style and it has the same bend. If there's a short shifter for them it should work for us as well.

that IS pretty short. if I wasn't saving for a house I'd get one.

Ok looked at the beatrush one and there is one major difference and that is how the cable connects on the bottom....seems like our sx4 does not have the little "nub" at the end but instead has a flat section with a hole in it. Not sure if that makes a difference but I would guess that it would otherwise you could use just about any short shifter for a honda, sti...ect that has the "nub" vs the flat end with a hole in it.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong on this. Also found a place in the netherlands that sells a short shifter for the Swift. Sent an email to see if they have them. I also hit Suzitech in Australia up (can you tell i want to change the shifter much....lol) and they responded that they are in fact working on getting one to market as well.

Now if it comes out that infact the Swift one does work...which as soon as I have the money I intend to find out...then I will be sure to let both Suzitech know. The thought being that if they can produce a part that is similar for the Swift and the SX4 in Australia it would help them to lower the cost and increase the base that they could sell to....and that is good for all of us. : )

I'll take pics of the 6 speed today. They look almost exactly like the 5 speed except for that reverse gear mechanism.

Found one that has a shorter throw but a taller height like you're describing.

OMG! where was I when this went on?! i changed the complete shifter assembly for my car at 25k miles because the planetary bushing (the black one over the steel ball) got damaged somehow...... now its doing the same thing sooooo might as well short shift it, and with the upcoming bucket seat i will have a lower seating position which would be awesome with shorter throws (which i consider like rowing a boat compared to REAL sport model cars)

To finally answer the OP's question the Laile Beatrush Quick Shift Lever (http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/laile/item/s78041qs/) and Quick Shift Control (http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/laile/item/s78041qsc/) designed for the Suzuki Swift (ZC31S) will fit 07-09 SX4s with the 5 speed transmission. The quick shift lever offers a reduction of travel by 15% over stock and sits 25 mm taller. The quick shift control offers a reduction of travel by 22% over stock and sits 50 mm taller. Full write up to come.
