The model codes of the SX4 are seen on many different websites. If you are curious what the model codes mean, here is a list.

YA11S - FWD Hatch M15A Engine
YA21S - FWD Hatch M16A Engine
YA41S - FWD Hatch J20A Engine
YA61S - FWD Hatch D19AA Engine
YA71S - FWD Hatch 9HX Engine
YA91S - FWD Hatch D20AA Engine
YB11S - AWD Hatch M15A Engine
YB21S - AWD Hatch M16A Engine
YB41S - AWD Hatch J20A Engine
YB61S - AWD Hatch D19AA Engine
YB71S - AWD Hatch 9HX Engine
YB91S - AWD Hatch D20AA Engine
YC11S - FWD Sedan M15A Engine
YC21S – FWD Sedan M16A Engine
YC41S – FWD Sedan J20A Engine

I have not found any vehicle codes that take account of the J20B. I am thinking that the YA41S, YB41S, and YC41S now include the J20B as well, but I have not found any evidence to support this thought. Please post if you have any model codes to add.

Here are the engine codes:
M15A – 1.5L 16V Petrol 1490cc DOHC VVT
M16A – 1.6L 16V Petrol 1586cc DOHC VVT
J20A – 2.0L 16V Petrol 1995cc DOHC
J20B – 2.0L 16V Petrol 1995cc DOHC VVT
D19AA – 1.9L 8V Diesel 1910cc SOHC DDiS
9HX – 1.6L 16V Diesel 1560cc DOHC DDiS
D20AA – 2.0L 16V Diesel 1956cc DOHC DDiS

Eventually I will add a chart of all the detailed engine specs, but I am not feeling that ambitious at the moment. :)

I Knew Mine was M16A VVT but "YC21S" intell is new. Also their is one more category that uses same M16A engine but without VVT i.e. are Sx4s before Nov2009(Factory Manufacturing Date ) in India. VVT was introduced only later. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_SX4#Maruti_version

this is actually part of the VIN number.

let's take my car
JS2YC415485xxxxxx
JS2 - Japan Suzuki
Y - SX4
C - trim (A=FWD hatch B=AWD hatch C=sedan)
4 - engine type (4=J20A 5=J20B)
1 - desing code (usually "A" for 2010+)
5 - grade
4 = check digit
8 = MY2008
5 - assembly plant (5=Kosai)
6 serial digits

there's a lot of info in a VIN, it's easy to remember when you work with them all day long. I could do an extensive list of Canadian VIN numbers, would be useful if someone from USA could do the same.

Thanks for adding that info. It is good to know the J20B engine code is designated as "5". I could not find anything that stated that at the time the list was put together.

Ugh! Second time trying to post this info... the stupid board ate the first submission. :soapbox: Guess I should have placed it in a word processing document.

You can swap a different engine into your car but there are many parts other than the engine required for the swap and it would not be worth the time/money.

I have done some research on the Maruti Suzuki VIN / Chassis numbers and was unable to find any clear answers on how these VINs are decoded. I have even asked the so called "VIN Gurus" on the Indian forums. Here is some info that I have found that may be helpful. I have left question marks where I was unable to verify the information for accuracy. It would be great to find out more detailed information about the VIN. Here is an example of a VIN to reference: MA3EFJC1SOOXXXXXX-GA

This is a Maruti Suzuki SX4 Sedan Petrol 1.6L 16v VVT. We can start with what we know. This is my understanding of the VIN. If any of the information is not correct or you have information to add please post.

MA3 = WMI - Maruti Suzuki India
EFJC1 = Variant Code - ?
E = 4 door saloon?
F = ?
J = ?
C = ?
1 = Design Code?
S00 = Type of Car - ?
S = Grade? Where 3=V, 2=S, and 1=E
0 = ?
0 = ?
XXXXXX = Serial ID / Chassis ID
GA = Car’s date of manufacture – July 2010

To identify the Maruti Suzuki car's date of manufacture, refer to the chassis number in the engine compartment next to the hood hinges. Your chassis number will look like *MA3FJC1S00XXXXXX*GA

The month codes:

A= JAN
B= FEB
C= MAR
D= APR
E= MAY
F= JUNE
G= JULY
H= AUG
J= SEP
K= OCT
L= NOV
M= DEC

The year codes:

B=2011
A=2010
9=2009
8=2008
7=2007
6=2006
5=2005
4=2004
3=2003
2=2002
1=2001

Remember the VIN does not include the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).

Below is some info I found on the SX4 Variants. Some additional information is needed.

FR4CS5 - Vxi MT or AT 1.6L VVT
FRDCS1 - Vdi MT Only VGT Engine - 1.3L Fiat DDiS
FR4CD5 - Zxi MT or AT 1.6L VVT
FRDCD1 - Zdi MT Only VGT Engine - 1.3L Fiat DDiS
?????? - Vxi Green 1.6L VVT with i-GPI bi-fuel Technology
?????? - 1.6L without VVT

This is a good start for gathering information on the Maruti Suzuki SX4.

Mine is the 1.6L VVT ZXI MT Model guess JC1 means the same. Also my VIN could be slightly different than the other Sx4 ZXI models, as it was of the first model to come off the assembly line when VVT was launched.. ( If, any such thing happens with VIN numbers ).

i.e JC1 could mean 1.6VVT ZXI MT
F = FWD
^Speculation only, have no solid proof to support it.
